Functional Specifications

SPOT features four key functions that enable users to send messages to friends, family or emergency responders,
based upon varying levels of need:

• Alert 9-1-1 (SOS)  – Emergency Alert is sent to the nearest Search & Rescue or Coastguard agency.
  • SPOT sends one message every 5 minutes until power is depleted or SOS is cancelled.
     
  Help request – Request help which is a level lower than an SOS life endangering situation.
  • SPOT sends one message every 5 minutes for one hour or until Help is cancelled
     
  Check In – Field workers can send in reports that they are OK.
  • SPOT sends three identical messages to the SPOT service for redundancy. The first of those three
    messages is delivered.
     
  Track Progress – Tracking location report is sent every 10 minutes and displayed on maps. Extra fee applies.
  • SPOT sends one message every 10 minutes for 24 hours or until SPOT is powered off.

Coverage

SPOT works around the world, including virtually all of North America, Europe and Australia, portions of South
